About Early Servicing in Spain: Optimizing the Lifespan of Fire Extinguishers

In Spain, ensuring compliance with fire protection regulations is crucial for every business owner. However, understanding the nuances of these laws and practices can often pose a challenge. Imagine you're reviewing your fire safety systems, and your technician suggests servicing your extinguisher ahead of schedule. But why does this happen, and what can you do to maximize the lifespan of your equipment?

Many fire protection companies price their services assuming one or two visits per client, depending on whether they service the extinguisher on-site or take it to their facility. If an extinguisher's service date falls between inspections, some companies won't return until the next scheduled visit.

The course of action depends on the company's policy. Some inform clients of impending service dates, leaving it to them to request the service on the due date. Others service extinguishers prematurely, sacrificing up to a year of their lifespan.

To avoid premature servicing, align your inspection schedule with your extinguisher's service month. If switching maintenance providers, time the transition for the month before servicing. This ensures inspections synchronize with service dates.

But what if you have extinguishers with different service months? You can either allow the provider to re-sync the inspection schedule, albeit at the cost of lifespan, or use reserve extinguishers to cover gaps during servicing periods.

Reserve extinguishers, not listed in the fire protection plan, provide uninterrupted coverage during servicing. For every extinguisher type and every group of up to four extinguishers due for service, keep a reserve extinguisher. To save costs, align the inspection month with the CO2 servicing month, allowing direct servicing by the technician while other extinguishers undergo service at the facility.

In conclusion, leveraging reserve extinguishers ensures uninterrupted coverage and maximizes extinguisher lifespan. Never neglect reserve extinguisher inspections; an uninspected reserve extinguisher serves no purpose. Understanding these strategies empowers business owners to navigate fire protection laws effectively.

By adhering to these practices, businesses can safeguard their premises effectively while optimizing fire extinguisher lifespans.
